Or check your routing table. Make sure you have a route to your network.
Most distro's do this for you in their init scripts, but it should
still bear looking into. Do a netstat -rn

Of course there's the obvious. Do the lights on the NIC's/hub light up?
As mentioned... it could be bad cable.
