Re: [Plug] telnetting around a firewall - non-technical considerations

So you're saying that you'd never talk in class, speed, jaywalk, or do anything the least bit beyond the rules? Some rules are meant to be broken. You can't live a full life without breaking rules. Now I'm not going to try and crack the AS/400 on the network, but I'm also not going to pay attention to rules against things such as checking my e-mail. Getting yelled at by an angry paralibrarian is a lot different than getting suspended. Above all else though is the fact that there is no rule that says I can't do this. They have simply blocked out telnet on the proxy server. That, and the chances that I would be seen and that somehow what I was doing would be interpreted as wrong are infinitesimally small. I'm not dealing with SysAdmins here. If it's in an IE window and it's not a game, porn, or e-mail, then they don't know if it's wrong or not. They can recognize things such as an MS-DOS prompt (easy to get through their laughable security), but something like a cgi telnet interface would be beyond their ability. Again, to recap, there are the three important things, the degree of punishment, the chance I'll get caught, and the question of whether it's even against the rules.

Michael: You gave our young friend some very good advise. DON'T DO IT
IF IT IS AGAINST THE SCHOOL RULES. i remember a college professor
telling a class I was in, to think about breaking the rules, because you
may grow up to desire a big position in government, business, etc. Look
at George W. to see how they are talking about his alleged drug use. He
was college age if I have the story straight; now he wants to be
president of the U.S. So, doing something when you are young and
stupid, may result 30 years from now, as a boomerang you didn't expect,
IMHO.
