pgp5 works fine, though I recommend gpg. It can uses the same algorithms as pgp, but all the code is developed internationally and no non-free algorithms are built in. otoh, these algorithms are still available separately. Check out any non-US debian site for debian packages, as I believe that's what you switched to.
