The debian package contains the latest greatest version of the
application, therefore the package is up to date.

Package maintainers generally do not modify the code of the applications
they contain, except maybe to get them to play nicer with debian
installations.

Modifying the code, dealing with bugs like this, is the job of the
application maintainer (Carl), who may have fallen off the face of the
earth.

ttysnoop is GPLed, download the code & make it work w/ unix98 PTYs :)

Also, why do you need to snoop /dev/ttyS1 instead of using the a virtual
console ?

Hmm, I have a feeling you can use old style PTYs when you have the unix98
stuff set up....
