Cool.  Looks like adding debug and kdebug 3 to /etc/ppp/options might get
that handshaking process dumped to /var/log/messages.  I also remember
problems with my asyncmap setting.

I each front-end will have a different set of "educated guesses"  Some will
work, some wont.
