Hi everyone, I work at DCANet, and I thought the group might be interested in an ISP's perception of the Bell Atlantic DSL saga. The way Bell delivers service to its customers -- and I use the term "service" very loosely here -- is via layer 2 bridging. Cable modems are also generally bridged devices, which is why many cable modem users see their neighbors' computers in the Windows "network neighborhood". From what we've gleaned, Bell Atlantic has had lots of problems with connectivity between end users and their ISPs -- whether it be BellAtlantic.net, DCANet, or another participating ISP. The typical situation is that the customer's DSL modem synchs OK with Bell's DSL access multiplexor (DSLAM) in the Bell central office, but that the customer can't route packets to and from the ISP's network. Bell has apparently formed some sort of "task force" to fix these routing issues, but we've seen no results as of yet. It's been our experience that up to 25-30% of our Bell DSL customers are offline because of this problem at any given moment in time. While this number is bad, and certainly unacceptable, the situation is exacerbated by poor communication, missed deadlines, and billing nightmares that both we and our customers experience when interacting with Bell. And did I mention the hour to two hour hold times to talk to anyone? The problems with Bell Atlantic Infospeed have become so severe that we have stopped accepting orders from customers for Bell DSL. Instead, we offer loops from Covad, Conectiv, and Northpoint -- all of which have been much more reliable and user-friendly. Covad in particular has its act together. -Andrew -- andrew@white.com On Tue, 28 Mar 2000, John Graham wrote: > I went from BA to DCANet on the 6th hoping to take advantage of a static IP > address.
