I'm interested in patching my 2.2.16-3 kernel, to make use of my USB devices (I have an Epson printer and scanner). Has anybody done this? A while ago, I had downloaded the patch (specifically, usb-2.4.0-test2-pre2-for-2.2.16-v3.diff.gz). I just never got around to installing. Well, now I want to install it. :-) However, the Linux-USB web page (<http://www.linux-usb.org>) is .. shall we say .. imperfectly clear. The latest patches linked there are for 2.2.18 (which is not yet released), nor do they give instructions on exactly WHAT I'm supposed to do with this patch file I already have. I mean, I can figure out I need to gunzip it. I can presume I uncompress into /usr/src/linux. But how do I install it? >From digging thru other sources, I *think* I'm supposed to do "patch -p0 usb-2.4.0-test2-pre2-for-2.2.16-v3.diff" - in the /usr/src/linux directory. But none of the docs I can see on the web page or it's links seem to state this explicitly. Is that right? And then I'm supposed to re-compile the kernel, turning on the new options? Anybody? After that, I believe I need to get a program (or is it a driver? Still not clear on that, either) called SANE. I've downloaded it, but one step at a time. I'll hold off on THAT, until I can see some kernel boot messages that say, "Oh, yeah - look; there's a USB controller and some devices over there". :-) -- ------------------------------------------------------------------ Michael J.
