Excellent, thanks, Bill. That did it. >From there, I was able to finish, not without having to repeat the use of dpkg as above. But a few more iterations of apt-get dist-upgrade and apt-get -f install and I now have no more packages awaiting installation or configuration. Whew. Now I just have to work up the courage to restart my X server and see if the new one comes up ok. ;-) Tomorrow is always a good day...
