so you can't boot from it or you can't install from it?  if the install
starts but then linux yells because it can't find the cdrom, then install
is still possible.  i installed mandrake 8.0 on an vaio sr33 so the
procedure should be the same for yours.  you have to append:

ide2=0x180,0x386

to the install initialization parameters to get linux to recognize the
cdrom.
