I'll time it tonight, from beginning to end 

make dep ; make clean ; make bzImage ; make modules ; make modules_install

Isn't there some timing command I could issue before and after, to do that?

As a point of reference, my kernel comes out to be something like 620K. I suppose I could make it smaller, but that's better than those behemoth 1M kernels that Mandrake comes with. They turn on EVERYTHING. :-)
