A gateway is a router. A router is used to get from one network to another.
This is called internetworking and produces an internet. (small i). THE
Internet (Large I) is the worlds biggist internet.

Your network is defined by your net mask.

Of your net mask is 255.255.255.0 and your local network is 111.111.111.0

Then any two computers with addresses from 111.111.111.1 - 111.111.111.256
would be on your local network and not need a router (gateway). If a system
is on the 111.111.222.0 network you will needs a router (gateway) to reach it.

When you hook to the internet, you will need to route traffic to it through a
gateway.

Keep in mind, if you want to call your systems by name instead of IP, you
will need either a DNS server or have host files in each system.
