OK. But the point is ... you wanna *keep* the modem, so that you can 
continue using it with a new ISP.

So maybe you can do what I did - sign up and suffer with Verizon for 
4-6 weeks; then switch ISP service to someone else, while keeping 
Verizon as line provider.

This way you don't have to pay $200 extra for the modem; you already 
have it, curtesy of your sentence .. err, stint ... at Verizon. :-)
