It may "work" but the reason they recommend against it is that any 
configuration customizations that you make to the network install 
affects all users.  By doing the user install (about 2 mb of 
configuration files and such are copied to your home directory), each 
user can retain their own customizations.

I didn't know that.  I guess that is why open office wasn't around when 
I was looking around before.  The choices, then were SO, Abiword, 
Corel, KOffice (in its infancy) and another big one I have a mental 
block recalling.
