MSFT just happens to have written the most popular implementation of it in use today. REALBasic on Mac OS is quite popular these days, since it can also build Windows applications. There is also a good BASIC for the Palm. And a search on Google yields a LOT of hits... It sounds like the real reasons for groaning over such languages is a lack of awareness.
