I need some advice. Yesterday morning, as the heat rose about 95 degrees, my Linux workstation's video card toasted itself (I presume). I work in an un-airconditioned office using fans to keep the air moving but, apparently, it was not enough. THE CARD: A Diamond Viper AGP V770 with 32 Meg of memory. I find replacement cards are about $50 on ebay (less if I don't object to it being used). SYMPTOMS: The video card still works... sort of. Everything that is black creates dark horizontal lines or shadows all the way across the screen. This happens regardless of video mode. It even happens in the VC's. I'm presuming that this means the output stage of the card got damaged due to the heat. Replacing everything from the video card connector out to the monitor makes no difference. Oh, and the monitor works just fine on other computers so it's not that either. USAGE: I run KDE at 1280x1024. I do some graphics (using gimp) but no games. Mostly, it's a business workstation with some development work. I like very crisp graphics (helps the "old" eyes) and quick display (helps the "short" temper). How I ended up using a $135 ultra fast gaming video card is a long story. Since it's clear that I've got to replace the card.... QUESTIONS: What is everybody else use/recommend for AGP video cards under Linux? My primary concern is that it's a good image at high resolution and the cost is reasonable. Advice welcome!
