All the desktop file is is a datafile that contains information about the current folder view. 99% of the time you dont need one, but in my case i have different folders with different properties, such as wallpapers, or views depending on the contents. example: my source directories usually are in a list view, while my digital photos are usually in icon view with previews. i usually have previews turned off because they slow things down. These are just here for properties, and lucky KDE will only write them if you use them.
