Thanks for your questions.

The purpose is to archive family and insurance documentation
snapshots from a camcorder, a Panasonic DV-200.  In addition to
the tape, it has a snapshot capacity of 12.  The software is the
transfer software which ships with the camera, and runs under
MSWindows.  After the transfer, the files move over to a Linux
box, never to see Win again.
