Re: [PLUG] monitor and rainbows

Please dont kill your self .. you dont even have to take it apart to re-focus the gun. Just moving one across the front of the glass will align it. Im sure this is not the correct way but it works and it can save you the $50-$80 it will cost  tech to do. Wont it be nice when CRT's are a thing of the past.

I did a google search on the subject :
To remove magnetism from a device. The term is usually used in reference to color monitors and other display devices that use a Cathode Ray Tube (CRT). These devices aim electrons onto the display screen by creating magnetic fields inside the CRT. External magnetic forces -- such as the earth's natural magnetism or a magnet placed close to the monitor -- can magnetize the shadow mask, causing distorted images and colors.

To remove this external magnetic forces, most monitors automatically degauss the CRT whenever you turn on the monitor. In addition, many monitors have a manual degauss button that performs a more thorough degaussing of the CRT. You can also use an external degausser that degausses the monitor from the outside. Since it may be impossible to remove the external magnetic force, degaussing works by re-aligning the magnetic fields inside the CRT to compensate for the external magnetism.

DON'T try this unless you really know what you are doing.  The Cathode ray tube is a capacitor which holds a large charge and the shock can kill you!

The yoke on the back of the cathode ray tube is most likely now loose from its designed location.  It is still firing the guns they are jsut no longer near aligned.  A tech who knows monitors can fix it and re-align the guns in under an hour.

The must have put it near a magnent .. the electron gun is off alignment.
You might be out of luck, but you can try putting a magnent near it to
re-focus it yourself. I've done this before and it worked... but if you mess
it up more please dont blame me.

Subject: [PLUG] monitor and rainbows

I just got my nice 20" monitor back from the movers, and it's
displaying white text in nice rainbows. Degaussing, my first guess,
doesn't do anything.

Anyone have any thoughts what might be happening, and, especially, if
I might be able to do something myself?

TIA.
