I vaguely recall hearing that Verizon blocks outbound SMTP SYN packets
that are headed outside of their network.  And as you mentioned, you can
only use a Verizon email address when using their mail servers.  The net
effect is that you can only use your Verizon email address when sending
mail (in a "normal"[1] fashion) from a machine on their network.
(Insert comments about vendor lock-in here.)

[1] Of course, you can always ssh to another host and send mail from
there, or use ssh port forwarding, but I'm talking about what upwards of
98% of their customers know how to do.
