<sob>I just want my old set up back</sob>

A comment about 'root' and protection of a UNIX system. Or, a chain is
only as strong as its most foolish link.

By design Linux is supposed to protect me by preventing certain changes
while running in regular user mode. Then it provides me with this
dangerous weapon called "su" -- like a loaded gun in an unlocked
cabinet. Of course, I have to use it to install software -- kaboom --
a "user friendly"(TM) script called "red carpet" (TM) decides that it
knows how to improve my entire interface -- not just install an email
enabled PIM, which was all I wanted.

Today will be a day wasted atoning for taking candy from a stranger. I
will end up spending a good part of the day learning how to uninstall
this digital cacophony, and then trying to restore my system to its
previous state of tranquility.
