Re: [PLUG] NIC/cable modem Question

yup. a nic on the internet side and a nic+hub/switch on the
internal side (the hub/switch is where all your internal
machines would go). if you have just one more windows
box a crossover cable for connecting just 2 machines would suffice.

its should be possible to trick just one ethernet card to serve
different networks, but from my scant reading it looks like
too much trouble to worry about ("ip aliasing" or something
like that).

you could also run dhcp on the internal side , so you windows
would just "get it" when they boot. so you would need to read
on "linux masquerade howto" for the gatewaying and setup
/etc/dhcpd.conf for if you want dhcp too. after it runs fine,
then you can turn on
samba for sharing windows shares too. samba + windows 95/98
is also what I have setup at home. linux makes for a very
good samba share (the shared disks are always there). Cant
say for the newer windows (w2k) since when i tried to samba
for a friend, they can't browse the shares although they
can mount the samba shares from windows.

I'm not sure what those other ports on your motorolla are for though,
but i would think you cannot connect your other machines there
since that would imply your be getting other IP addresses from your
isp. I sortof remember being offered by my isp, comcast, for
extra ip addresses but they'll have to send me a hub (for
expanding the ports on the cable modem). so anyway, using any
other ports on your cable modem side would imply another
internet IP address for you, thats why you need to Nat/Masq
your just one ip address.

Unless your ISP gave you a couple of other ip addresses..then
thats another setup.

have fun,
