hey jeff,

how about you post your logfile either to the list, or better on
a webpage where we can take a look at it?  also, do you remember
what you upgraded after the apt-get update?  maybe you didn't mention
it for the sake of brevity, but just to clarify apt-get update doesn't
upgrade anything other than the list of what's available.  what release
of debian are you running?  what file systems got fsck'd?  all that
failing, you can probably just re-install x  and see if that magically
fixes your problem

# apt-get --reinstall install xserver-xfree86
