Debian installed via Knoppix AMD k6-III 400 288M ram Trident 8M Blade video Did apt-get update 2 days ago. Yesterday the taskbar (hidden by default) elected to remain hidden, period. Being a Windows expert, I rebooted. Reboot seemed to just sit there right before it should power cycle so I `helped' it. Got a `run fsck manually' message and did. Lots of problems, all fixed, boots to command line. Startx brings up the normal grey-ish initial screen, mouse X-cursor comes up, GUI dumps immediately to prompt. Suggests I check /var/log/XFree86.0.log. The only warnings there involved missing font dirs. Everything proceeds wonderfully - no other warnings. Last section seems to be loading PS/2 Mouse, ZAxisMapping: buttons 4 and 5. Last line is (II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device "PS/2 Mouse" (type: MOUSE) Nothing looks odd in the XFconfig file but I haven't seen enough of them to know. Cards are physically secured, all connections tight and tested. 1. any ideas? 2. did I make a boo-boo by helping the computer reboot? There was no activity for quite a while. Can it take 10 minutes or more to do whatever it needs to do for the filesystem to reboot? 3. if I need to check or reinstall something, where should I start? Should I try XFconfig? 4. Why don't I Ghost the #(*@ing image for times when this happens?
