Gabriel, there was a sysadmin job in Ivyland that I was well qualified for. I put down that I heard about them from you in case you get a referral bonus or something. The page works fine under Mozilla / OS X by the way.

covers a ridiculously broad spectrum. Are you an MCSE? Are you a Mac
person? (My personal preference would be, by far, for the latter,
but...) What do you do? Networking stuff? Web "development"? Graphic
design? Computer layout? CAD? What's your backgound and education?

You weren't talking to me but I'll answer since I am in the same boat.

I've been in IT for 8 years. Windows NT for 8 years, UNIX/Linux for 5 years. Comfortable in both environments. No certs, but lots of good experience. More recently I've been working with OS X as well (since picking up a TiBook). I primarily do sysadmin work but am not too proud to do help desk work. I can deal with geeks and/or technophobes. It doesn't show on my resume, mainly because it doesn't fit well for IT stuff, but I do videography work on the side so I have some qualifications there as well.

I live in NC now but I am moving to PA in January. My temporary phone number in PA is 610-891-1889 for the days that I'm up there. I'm going to be living in Prospect Park so anything in center city is convenient, Delaware County, south Jersey, etc.

Here's my resume in plain text (it might paste funny so forgive any formatting oddities):

7/01 – Present – Independent Consultant
During this period of time I worked primarily for Eastern Radiologists and The Outer Banks Hospital, as well as a number of one-off consulting projects for smaller companies and web sites.
•Migrated e-mail server from third party to in-house hosting at Eastern Radiologists (private health care practice with about 30 physicians), using Red Hat Linux, Postfix MTA (SMTP), RAV Anti-Virus, Cyrus IMAP (IMAP & POP3), SSL, Squirrelmail (web mail client) and Apache (http server).
•Put into place a fully digital workflow at The Outer Banks Hospital that cut a traditionally days long turnaround time for signed reports from hours or days to minutes. This centered around an Intelerad DICOM gateway (IntelePACS) running on Linux.
•Administration of Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000 servers, in a multiple master domain environment (Eastern Radiologists). Created shared directories on Windows NT/2000 servers for private home directories, semi-private department directories and semi-public practice-wide directories.Shared files were logically laid out and distributed. Presentation of these shares was consolidated through the use of Microsoft Dfs (Distributed File Sytem) on a Windows 2000 Server.
•Installed and configured bulk email discussion lists for several clients using the GNU Mailman mailing list manager, with either the Sendmail or Postfix SMTP MTA.
•Deployment of OpenNMS with PostgreSQL for SNMP network management at Eastern Radiologists.
•Design and deployment of single sign on service using OpenLDAP, Kerberos V and Samba at Eastern Radiologists. Windows and UNIX users were able to work in a unified environment. This allowed client to take two Windows NT/2000 domains down and replace with a solution that had zero client access license costs.
•Designed and deployed OpenBSD 3.1 firewall, redirecting outbound http traffic through a Squid caching HTTP proxy and SquidGuard web content filter at Eastern Radiologists.
•ISC dhcpd (DHCP) and bind (DNS) to provide IP address reservations and dynamic DNS services at Eastern Radiologists.
•Automated desktop deployment with Norton Ghost at Eastern Radiologists.
•Centralized syslog services using Linux, msyslogd, and MySQL RDBMS. This provided more secure off-host logging services, and the ability to execute ad hoc queries against the logs using SQL at Eastern Radiologists.
•Much of the remote work is done from an Apple Powerbook G4 running OS X 10.2 with Microsoft Office X and VNC.
•Helped staff-up IT team for Eastern Radiologists, who never had an IT resource on staff before. Transitioned day to day care of the network to this team. I still serve them as a specialist for problem escalation, special projects & deployments, change management oversight and more.
•Developed an intensive one week training program for Eastern Radiologists IT staff to introduce them to OpenBSD and train them on TCP/IP security (firewall).
11/99 - 6/01 BOPS, Inc.
•Leader of local IT team.
•Directly responsible for administration of approximately 16 Windows NT servers (mostly Compaq Proliant DL380, some DL360, and some Micron servers), over 200 Windows NT workstations (Micron desktops, Dell and IBM laptops), 16 Solaris hosts (E450, E420, Ultra 10, Ultra 80, Sparc 5) and 30 Linux hosts (various x86 platform machines. Also a small number of OpenBSD machines were employed for network infrastructure purposes. About one dozen RIM Blackberry wireless email devices were supported and integrated with Microsoft Exchange 5.5.
•Responsible for maintaining multi-site Microsoft Exchange 5.5 infrastructure. Placed gateway servers between the Internet and the Exchange servers to increase security and also to filter out spam/porn mail, and stop virus attacks at the gateway.
•Used Veritas BackupExec on Windows NT platform to back up Windows NT and UNIX/Linux environments. Tapes were managed with Adic Fastor 22 and Adic Scalar 100 DLT jukeboxes.
•All client machines had a perl interpreter installed. Login script was written in perl for advanced functionality, including tracking of who was using what machines so if a machine was missing from its assigned area I could quickly and easily find out who saw it last.
•Disaster recovery planning, software deployment planning, and internal IT policies and procedures.
•Version control (CVS and VSS) and issue tracking (Visual Intercept and Gnats).
•Deployed end user desktop machines using Norton Ghost. Ghost was also used to maintain clean images of workstation configurations to reduce support overhead costs.
•Made use of MRTG and OpenNMS on Linux/Apache environment to track LAN/WAN traffic trends and Internet utilization via SNMP.
•Maintained a number of Cisco devices including several 2600 series routers, 3548 switches, 2924 switches, 4000 series switch, 6509 switch, 3508 switches. In addition to basic installation and configuration, was also able to set up Layer 3 on 6509, VLAN, syslog and WCCP to a transparent caching HTTP proxy (Squid).
•Recipient of peer recognition award in June 2001.
•Set up and maintained Intel LANDesk Suite to maintain central inventory of hardware/software, and remote control of desktops for troubleshooting purposes (especially when there were three sites with only myself to support them). This significantly reduced human resources costs, as well as potential travel expenses. Additionally, this permitted ad hoc queries and reports so I could most effectively determine who was due for hardware or software upgrades.
•Introduced Linux to network environment primarily to solve a hardware development environment problem. The Linux implementation solved the problem and saved the company a lot of money over the Windows NT or Solaris alternatives.
•Managed Macintosh resources for web site team, including Photoshop workstations and Macintosh web server.

2/96 - 8/97 Omicron Consulting – http://www.omicron.com
Senior staff consultant for Omicron Consulting, a Philadelphia, Pennsylvania firm. Recipient of two Gladiator Awards (performance-based award). Time was spent at various high profile accounts for Omicron. Below are listed some of the more notable projects.
Prudential Insurance via Omicron Consulting
•Technical team lead for designing and deploying IT infrastructure for 24/7 call center.
•Developed a Windows NT 3.51-based infrastructure to service over 3,000 clients in no less than three separate sites. Had one technical resource working under me. This environment scaled to over 5,000 seats within a year. Unconfirmed reports state that the infrastructure eventually scaled to 10,000 seats without any major design changes.
•Infrastructure included Microsoft Windows NT 3.51 Servers with a single master domain and multiple resource domains. All clients were running Microsoft Windows NT 3.51 Workstation.
•Rexx scripting for desktop control and application distribution purposes.
•Microsoft Exchange groupware solution.
•Created easy client distribution method using a boot floppy and a short set of instructions that low cost interns were able to follow. OS and applications were loaded down automatically over the network after system was booted from a floppy using Ghost.
Mobil Research via Omicron Consulting
•Brought in as the NT technical team lead on Omicron’s "SWAT Team" with three subordinates.
•Tasked to rescue Mobil Research from a network that was suffering due to frequent and extended lengths of network downtime, loss of data, poor help desk response time, and other ailments.
•Migrated server farm from 10Mbps hubs to 100Mbps switches. Subnetted facility to further reduce broadcast community size.
•Put a full tape backup system into place, with extensive custom documentation on backup & recovery policies, and disaster recovery preparation.
•Cleaned up their Windows NT domain, consolidated servers to reduce Client Access License fees, and educated local IT staff on system administration best practices after the environment was stabilized.
•Used Windows NT servers to emulate Novell Netware in order to migrate users away from Network in a phased approach. In doing so, the skills set requirements placed upon the local IT staff were greatly reduced. This further reduced licensing costs for Mobil.
The Vanguard Group via Omicron Consulting
•Technical team lead.
•Project scope was to develop a highly automated Windows NT 3.51Workstation client while still granting end users freedom to customize their environment.
•Used shell scripting to achieve automation. Rexx was used heavily. Used Ghost for desktop deployment.
U.S. Vision via Omicron Consulting
•Technical team lead varying numbers of subordinates
•Integration of Macintosh based marketing department with Windows NT domain.
•Developed an advanced Windows NT 4.0 Server design, Windows 95 design with high security and automation requirements, and campus network for U.S. Vision’s corporate headquarters.
•Groupware solution was Lotus Notes.
•Desktop security was partially enforced by the use of mandatory profiles and domain-enforced policies.
•File sharing resources were consolidated into one logical network drive, via Microsoft Dfs.
•Transitioned out Novell Netware servers in individual departments with centrally administered Windows NT servers.
•Wrote extensive documentation for this client as existing IT staff was under qualified to maintain a more typical Windows NT environment. After several follow-ups over a period of three years, the network design was still in place and good reports continued to come in on the performance and reliability.

Other projects for Omicron included extensive design specifications for a corporate Intranet solution for Catholic Health Initiative, network health assessments for Pennsylvania State Hospital, Tastybake Inc., and Reliance Insurance. Built various servers for other clients at Omicron’s home office, and provided occasional internal network support for Omicron’s own servers when required.
