I have found that the artsd plugin in particular is laggy. There should also be settings to change the buffer size, so you may want to try that first. For the normal OSS driver (out to /dev/dsp), the buffer controls are inside XMMS. For artsd, the controls are inside the KDE config. I'm sure you can find similar settings for other audio servers (esd, etc). Michael F.
