They are. :-) And very extensible, providing for SSH, IPSec VPNs, etc.
Even SAMBA and mail server software packages are available, altho you
really shouldn't run those on a LEAF box facing the Internet.

The newest derivative, Bering, is pretty close to a 10 minute setup.
2.4.18 kernel, with IPTables via the Shorewall project.
