Doesn't the work happen on remote hosts? I think we've lost the thread of this conversation. Chris Hedemark (not me) has trouble making X work on a new (black, pillbox) Dell OptiPlex because the video chipset is too new to be supported by RH, even 8.0 (Rawhide may work, and he's in the process of collecting the packages from it he needs). You suggested, "Just use an older box." I said, "I do that, but I'm getting a bit sick of the older box because, though X works fine, the processor's a bit slow." I use an older, larger, beige Dell OptiPlex (a GX1). You said, "What about lighter graphics on the older machine?" I said, "How does that affect my wanting a faster processor?" Chris has a graphics problem. He doesn't get any X at all (well, okay, fine, he can have 640x480 with the SVGA driver, but that's worse than just using a text console) with 4.reallyrecent under Red Hat Linux 8.0. I have no graphics problem (I've got two PCI Matrox Millenia PCI cards, and two Trintrons doing 11x9 in 24 bit color with Xinerama) using XF86 4.early under NetBSD 1.6-current. Chris has no processor problem (as evidenced by the fact that he's building XF86 4.2.99 on the *chance* it might work, and then all of the modules it depends upon, from source RPMs. I, on the other hand, wait about a minute for OpenOffice to start up, twenty seconds for Phoenix to start up, so forth. I would like a faster processor. What also may have been missed in all this is that Chris and I work in cubicles directly across from each other, doing effectively the same job for the same employer. So, still think I should be trying lighter graphics? -- gabriel rosenkoetter gr@eclipsed.net Attachment:
