Re: [PLUG] Laptop Recommendations

I'll start with lack of a command line interface.

For me, it is not a good OS. For my wife, who is a complete technophobe,
it is pretty nifty. Her experience with vintage macs is limited to a
PowerMac 5400/180 that I restored and plopped in front of her with OS 9
and some relatively recent version of MS Office.
Having come from both a Linux and a Windows background, I think OS X is a
huge leap forward for Mac OS in terms of capabilities (forget those tinker
toy databases you used under OS 9... you've got PostgreSQL running in the
background with all the bells & whistles, or MySQL if you prefer, or even
Oracle if you have more dollars than sense).
But from a desktop perspective there is still a lot of stuff missing. I
don't know if we'll ever get it because it goes against Apple's idea of
what is stylish. For example, I'd like to have X11 more seamlessly
integrated, possibly to the point of having Aqua run as an X11 window
manager so I can export the display, tunnel it through ssh, etc. Aqua
also needs virtual desktops. Those cinematic displays are cute but leave
me wanting for more desktop real estate, especially vertical space.
Some of the iApps are still flaky. Mail.app hosed on me in a major way
last week, and I'm still cleaning up from that mess. I've had iMovie
crash when being fed somewhere around 30GB of clips (granted that was
before version 3 came out). I should probably be using Final Cut Express
anyway.
There are other goofy apple-centric bits but overall I really love OS X.

The TiBook has had a couple of hardware problems:
1) Question mark key broke off. Guess I was asking too many questions.
Quick run to the Durham apple store and it was fixed for free.2) My CD-R/DVD combo drive is flaking out on me. I think it's b0rked.
Haven't been to the Apple store yet, and I am cringing because I didn't
buy Apple Care and don't know if they'll cover it or not.3) This is a minor nit. There is no tolerance between the keyboard and
LCD. So my keyboard leaves an imprint of itself on the screen. This is
not true of all TiBooks but it is pretty common.
