Install Apple's X11 distribution.  It does what you want.  You still 
have to start up the X server, but aside from that it works the way 
you're looking for.

What did it do?  I've been using Mail.app for several months now 
talking IMAP/SSL to my mail server as well as to my .Mac account 
without any trouble at all..

Same thing happened here, but with the U key.  Apple sent me a 
replacement keyboard at no charge.
