Actually, using Samba (SMB) for authentication sounds interesting. It's pretty easy to use Samba to share files between Linux PCs or between Windows and Linux PCs. I would think it would be equally easy to use Samba for authentication. And it should be easy for a Windows admin to do. But what about security?
