Well Gabriel, I quite understand about crossing the line you mention. However, I'm not trying to get people to write a procedure for me. Your quote from me above was in response to someone saying "well, why don't you just...", which to me sounded like that person believed it was a simple thing to do. What you want to do is NOT simple. If it's going to work and be maintainable (by YOU) you need to understand far more about the IA32 boot process than, demonstrably, you do. You are most definitely correct! I would love to understand it. I've been trying to understand it. Perhaps I'll have to go directly to the Linux boot code. If I get this to work, do you suppose my writing a HOWTO would be in order? Having us write up a set procedure for how to do this might get you through this one time, but it won't get you through any problems you may have eventually, and it strikes me as a bit dishonest for your cleints (you *did* say you were getting paid to set this up, didn't you?). I don't think I said it, but you're quite right. Although booting from raid is more my own little quest. The client just wants a system that can be recovered in case of possible failure modes. Thanks for everybody's attempts to help me. If I get it to work, I'll try to write something up and let people know how I did it.
