hi dan, i think what you ought to do really depends on your needs. do you want to be able to access your email remotely from elsewhere in the world, where ssh'ing to your box wouldn't suffice? is this a service you want to provide for other people? is security a concern? do you only want to be able to send mail? i'd recommend against either pop or imap by themselves, as they involve the passing of secrets in cleartext, allowing anyone who cares enough to listen access to your services. instead, assuming something like postfix won't work for you, you should install an ssl-encrypted version of whatever you choose. from what i understand pop3 is going the way of the dodo in favor of imap[1], but they both work quite well and there are several software packages that you can use. i can't recommend any of them personally because i just use postfix on the machines of mine that need a server[2]. sean [1] in fact this is completely baseless, someone please correct me :) [2] meaning sending and recieving mail. if just sending to another mailhub, ssmtp is really nice and simple.
