IMAP has some serious security problems at the protocol level that don't look like they are going to get fixed anytime soon. (I'm not talking about the fact that it's a clear text protocol.) If your users don't need a central datastore for their mail then don't even bother with IMAP. Stick with POP3. Usually, the pop3 service program that installs on most distros is part of the UW-IMAPd package of programs. I have no experience with it since I usually just install Qpopper (which supports SSL tunneling and TLS.) -- GPG Fingerprint: C900 18EF 0C36 4EAF A93C F073 85D4 8B3C F3D8 077B On the 28th day of April in the year 2003 you wrote: > Date: Mon, 28 Apr 2003 14:58:33 -0400 > From: sean finney <seanius@seanius.net> > To: plug@lists.phillylinux.org > Subject: Re: [PLUG] pop3 server? > > hi dan, > > i think what you ought to do really depends on your needs. do you > want to be able to access your email remotely from elsewhere in > the world, where ssh'ing to your box wouldn't suffice? is this > a service you want to provide for other people? is security > a concern? do you only want to be able to send mail? > > i'd recommend against either pop or imap by themselves, as they involve > the passing of secrets in cleartext, allowing anyone who cares enough > to listen access to your services. instead, assuming something like > postfix won't work for you, you should install an ssl-encrypted version > of whatever you choose. from what i understand pop3 is going the way > of the dodo in favor of imap[1], but they both work quite well and there > are several software packages that you can use. i can't recommend any > of them personally because i just use postfix on the machines of mine > that need a server[2]. > > sean > > [1] in fact this is completely baseless, someone please correct me :) > [2] meaning sending and recieving mail. if just sending to another > mailhub, ssmtp is really nice and simple. > > > On Mon, Apr 28, 2003 at 02:33:12PM -0400, Dan Roberts wrote: > > > > > > > > > > hey all.
