Could you see Parrish's flagpole up on campus?

I saw some structure in the distance on campus that may be what you're talking about (sorry I don't know the Swarthmore campus at all). Looking from on top of the building, to the right of the bell tower, I could see a water tower and then some other tall structure next to it with a flag flying from the top of it.

What about the train
station? (Trainstation's nice because it's a straight shot down the
tracks to Morton; no such lock on the way to Media. Who knows if
SEPTA would go for something like this, though.)

There are some trees blocking the view, but I think 802.11a could punch through it.

Some of your message got lost last night (cell phone flaked; not
necessarily a good omen ;^>); could you see any part of my place
past 101 Chester? Because if you can get to me, I can get to most of
downtown Swarthmore from Park Ave. north.

I *think* I can see your roof, but I'm not sure if it was yours or not. I took lots of pics of that general area with the intention of showing you and seeing if one of those was yours.

One of those tall buildings (ONE-OH-ONE; yes it's printed that way
on their address sign) houses (used to house?) the Math Forum, a
formerly Swarthmore-associated online-education company (non-profit?
don't recall). I used to know a bunch of people there, but I don't
know who's still left (there was a lot of turnover around the time
the moved out of Swarthmore's environs into ownership by a private
company).

http://www.mathforum.com/ makes me think that they may have moved to
Drexel entirely at this point. But finding out who owns that joint
and if they're amenable couldn't hurt.

Yeah that building is the most useful of the three tall ones there. The two I was on are both managed by the same company, and one super runs both buildings. He's a nice guy, doesn't understand much of what we're doing but doesn't care. He did point out that he gets a lot of money for the cell phone antennas up there but didn't expect anything from me.

Huh. I thought that the Greylock was the norther of the two (that
is, to the left when looking from Chester/320). Was I just confused?

Yep. Check out Swarthmore in Mapquest (link to specific map sent to you privately). The train tracks run east-west with 320 running north into springfield and south into chester.

In any case, how would Strath Haven kiddies make it up on that roof?
The front door has real security (you either have to break glass,
have a key, or be buzzed in to get in) and the fire esacpes in the
back don't come close to touching the ground.

All it takes is one strath haven kiddie who lives in the building to buzz the other ones in. When I was a strath haven kiddie myself, I had no less than three friends in that building.

Also, one time I got a random person to buzz me in through semi-clever social engineering.

Weren't you, at one point, considering Strath Haven condominium? I
think it's a pretty poor pick for any back haul stuff (it's on the
way downhill, at the corner of Yale and Harvard), but finding a way
to hit it

I don't really know anyone there or have any sort of connections to the place. I think if anyone lives there that wants to be on the mesh, it would be useful to have a node on the roof, but otherwise I wouldn't go to any trouble for that building.

The top of the hill on campus would be great though. You can see
four states from the roof of Parrish (counting PA, of course).

That may be the tall building I saw to the right of the bell tower and back a ways, from the POV of the roof of the Greylock.

Only in the winter. I'd say it's best to assume that trees are
solid.

That would make it really hard to hit the train station directly from any of the buildings I have access to. Your roof would be a better bet for most of the "downtown" area, including the train station. I would bet an omni on your roof could hit the train station.
