As Magnus pointed out, becoming an official non-profit organization
might be important. That sounds like a lot of effort to go through for
one LUG. Since other LUGs seem to come up with similarly great ideas,
what if a multi-LUG non-profit were formed?

Non Profit setup?

Painful! Bylaws, officers, accounting, etc, etc, etc.

Meeting after meeting after meeting into the middle of the night.
For political crap, not technical learning.

Been there with the PC Club of South Jersey about 15 years ago.

Huge amount of hassle and responsibility.

Don't take it lightly.

Barry's right about the hassle, responsibility with the officers, accounting, bylaws, etc. Not so much meetings as a lot of responsibility for whoever it falls upon to comply with state law and IRS regs, filings, etc. It's worth it if you want to /be/ a non-profit, and do other charitable and community oriented things, but not for a one shot. (i.e., may be worth it for PLUG, Jr.) Usually someone in the group who is an accountant by profession, and is set up to do it, takes on this responsibility.
