Since you want a > relatively minor change and you're new, try the simplest solution first. You should not have to recompile the kernel. Most usb stuff on RHL "just works". I would suggest watching the logs when you plug in one of the devices and see what it says. If that does not help post more info here and see if anyone has any further suggestions.
