xf86config(1) is pretty useless in my exprince. I believe that
Debian ships xf86cfg(1), which is much better.

Failing that, just do `X -configure`:

       -configure
               When this option is specified, the X server  loads
               all  video  driver  modules,  probes for available
               hardware, and writes out an initial  XF86Config(5)
               file based on what was detected.  This option cur
               rently has some problems on some platforms, but in
               most  cases it is a good way to bootstrap the con
               figuration process.  This option is only available
               when the server is run as root (i.e, with real-uid
               0).

> SubSection "extmod"
> Module section keyword expected
> X connection to :0.0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown)

Where'd the XF86Config you're trying to use come from?

(Did you upgrade a system using XF86 3 to XF86 4?)

Unless I'm mistaken, you *did* just upgrade from XF86 3 to 4. XF86
3 config files won't work with XF86 4.
