I solved my problem using testparm. If you are using the default smb.conf location, just run testparm -s My problem involved some WINS settings which I hadn't realized were contradictory. Are you using swat? If so, check the status page to see if nmbd is running. No running nmbd (Names Master Browser Daemon) allows the linux machine to browse the windows machines, but without it the windows machines can't browse the linux machine. If nmbd is not running, try starting it from that page.
