It certainly isn't when you told us that the message was text/plain.
That's PRECISELY my point. It's YOUR responsibility to state the
terminal type necessary for display of your message (and you can't
go mixing them, as you did).



The message above seems to have been sent in ISO-8859-1, which doesn't handle Japanese text. The Japanese plain-text above can be viewed by setting the encoding to EUC-JP. If it were composed in UTF-8 I would have been able to view both English and Japanese without changing the encoding.


I believe my messages go out in UTF-8 now that that is my default. It used to be ISO-8859-1. Both send plain-text. Both contain the standard ASCII characters.
