It certainly isn't when you told us that the message was text/plain.
That's PRECISELY my point. It's YOUR responsibility to state the
terminal type necessary for display of your message (and you can't
go mixing them, as you did).

You needed to base64 that whole thing before handing it off to
GnuPG, as well.
