Re: [PLUG] Switching from Cable to DSL

Free wireless router, after rebate. I think it's a Linksys.
1st month free, although I will have to pay shipping of the install kit.
Since I have a Verizon calling plan the cost after the first month will remain at $30 per month.

That sounds like a worthwhile deal, especially since you can keep the router if you get disatisfied.

I have Verizon DSL at home and Speakeasy DSL at work.

My Verizon DSL connection seems to disconnect briefly at noticeable rate. I notice this because I will get messages in a browser that are something like "www.google.com not found" and all I have to do is try the same address once or twice more, one or two seconds later. Big downloads don't seem to be affected seriously by this, which is maybe surprising, and the average bandwidth seems okay, too (I measured it early on but I don't remember what it was now). This really could be a setup issue, and I have never tracked it down. Also, I know my phone line is shaky: I used to get wildy varying modem speeds on it.

My Verizon setup is not wireless: I have a "modem" not a router, and it has a 8/10 modular ethernet connection.

Now, someone else on this list has raved about Speakeasy, and I'd just like to second that. The #1 thing about them is that the tech guys are smart and are not spooked by linux. The have a nice web based mail thing set up which I use when I'm away and its very convenient.

(I think I owe you an email about my recent printer question, too. I went AWOL from the list because I was away at the conference for which I was trying to print things.)

Ben
