my roomate and i took a stab at mythtv a couple months back. overall,
we were very impressed with the interface and the underlying system,
but unfortunately the linux driver support for our particular tv
tuner card isn't quite there yet (yay, proprietary technology). we've
heard there have been some advancements lately, so we'll be taking
another try at it Real Soon Now.

if you have a tv tuner card, there's a related project called knopmyth,
which, as the name suggests, is a live-on-cd distribution with the
software already installed. there are also pre-compiled .debs available
on the mythtv webpage, which iirc are maintained by a prominent
debian developer (no i don't know why they're not in main in that case)
