Quoting Matthew Ozor <mtozor@yahoo.com>: > You guys read into things too much and by doing so you > miss the simple question. > > When typing in VIM in -INSERT- mode all characters are > standard 0-127 ascii. I was asking how to type in the > EXTENDED ACSII codes 128-255. I didn't need to know > about setting different terminals, or all ISO > characters sets. *Using a missle to kill an ant* Because you didn't care about "pointless facts" you did not ask the question in a way that people who know the particular "pointless fact" that you want would know exactly which one you were looking for. The entire point of all these "missiles" and "books" is that "EXTENDED ASCII" is an extremely ambiguous term. I'm sure we're very sorry that we didn't magically know what you meant. > How hard would it be for someone to say -> CTRL-V x## If you had read my first message, perhaps you would have noticed that I said: "Alternately, you can use Ctrl-V to enter a character by numeric value." My mailer also showed a list of characters with diacritical marks. If you had specified that you were looking for ways to enter codepage 437 graphical characters, the inconsiderate entity that is the "PLUG list" would likely have provided advice that was closer to the information that you were trying to obtain. > I notice alot of that on the PLUG list. No need to > write a book when one sentence will do. If you don't > know the ansewer don't complicated the problem with > pointless facts. "If you don't know the answer..." Charming. If you had read the "pointless" messages instead of stewing over how they weren't providing the information that you so richly deserve, you might have noticed that they were being answered by people who actually know a fair amount about the topic, and that the way you were asking the question was ambiguous and incorrect. You could then have rephrased the question in a way that graciously clarified your query. Capitializing the word "EXTENDED" does not count as clarification, particularly when it follows a number of messages about different ways that "EXTENDED ASCII" might be understood. I've got to say that this makes me pretty grumpy. I subscribe to this mailing list to learn new things, and to help people. I _appreciate_ it when other people take the time and the trouble to share their knowledge. I try to take the time to figure out what people are asking, and to share the things that I have learned through my own experimentation. I often give more information than is strictly requested because I'm not just responding to the person asking the question - I'm sending a message that will be seen by all the subscribers to PLUG, and I hope that the information may be of interest to at least a few people on the list, knowing that those who aren't interested HAVE THE OPTION OF NOT READING IT! You're welcome. pls ___________________________________________________________________________ Philadelphia Linux Users Group -- http://www.phillylinux.org Announcements - http://lists.phillylinux.org/mailman/listinfo/plug-announce General Discussion -- http://lists.phillylinux.org/mailman/listinfo/plug
