First you need to use a disk partitioning tool like fdisk or cfdisk to
partition the new drive.

I am getting fdisk errors and segfaults. Here is the output of /sbin/fdisk /dev/hdb:

Warning: too many partitions (16, maximum is 8).

It sound like your partition map is messed up. Try using "cfdisk" and
see if it can handle it.

I had to download and install cfdisk. It worked! Deleted the existing partition and created a new 5 g partition for /home now to follow the other advice as to moving home there.

Now, a follow up question: If I plan to install a new distro on the remaining 15 g, should I move /home first, or wait for the new distro to create a new /home in the partition and then just move the existing files there. I assume that, in order to share this new /home directory between the distros, I need to have /home in its own partition. I guess my question is whether to install the new distro first.
