This is a new problem that seems to have appeared out of nowhere.



Shot in the dark, but "appeared out of nowhere" rings a bell with me.  When
did it last work?  Between then and the first failure, did you install any OS
updates?  I recall a recent Samba update a couple of days ago?

Yes.  Did several

   apt-get update && apt-get upgrade

Now getting the following message with apt get upgrade

   ** (process:5174): CRITICAL **: file eggdesktopentries.c: line 2223
   (egg_desktop_entries_add_group): assertion
   `egg_desktop_entries_lookup_group (entries, group_name) == NULL' failed

   ** (process:5174): CRITICAL **: file eggdesktopentries.c: line 2223
   (egg_desktop_entries_add_group): assertion
   `egg_desktop_entries_lookup_group (entries, group_name) == NULL' failed

   ** (process:5174): CRITICAL **: file eggdesktopentries.c: line 2223
   (egg_desktop_entries_add_group): assertion
   `egg_desktop_entries_lookup_group (entries, group_name) == NULL' failed

And the following with apt-get update

Failed to fetch
