I see two answers to this question. Do you want to just use Linux on your desktop with a GUI? If so then I would suggest any of the three you mentioned and buy a book. I believe a good book for such a need is "Point & Click Linux!" If you want to use (and administer) linux on the server side of the world, I think it is a good idea to start off with two good books "Linux in a Nutshell" and "Running Linux" (both available at amazon.) I would also suggest a distro that isn't meant for new users. Download the iso of your choice **slackware anyone?? :)** and just start from scratch. It all depends really on your ultimate goal. If you just want linux on your desktop then go for Mandrake, SuSE or Debian. If you want to learn HOW everything works and how to administer such a network then I would suggest challenging yourself a little bit. Again this is just my opinion and I am sure some will disagree, but hey, that is what this list is for, right??? Cheers everyone. I'm a resident windows user who is seriously ready to switch things up and jump ship to linux. Now, for the research i've done so far, the consensus on the best distro's for newbies who really want to learn the OS like me are debian, mandrake, and suse. So, if anyone could offer some extra advice on exactly which "ship" I should jump to here, or what the majority distro used here in philly is so i'll have some people to talk to about it, i'd really appreciate it.
