Right. Every time Ubuntu released a security update for the kernel,
grub got mangled. I had to edit the boot lines from the grub menu to
get it to boot and then manually change hd1 to hd0, and hdb to hda. for
future boots. I never ran grub-update, either. However, dpkg ran it
when updating a kernel and that's where the problem was. There are two
places where changes are necessary in the comments to prevent future
damage by grub-update.
