I believe I just saw a thread on another mailing lisst about cygwin
experiencing similar behavior (you had to truncate the filename length).
I assume it is the underlying OS that causes the problems for cygwin.

Odd that 256 bytes is thought to be enough.  Oh well, yet another reason
...
