Paul had suggested a firmware upgrade, and it seems Samsung provides
one, except it is only available as a w32 executable.  I should probably
swap the drive for the one in my son's w2k machine so that the firmware
upgrade can be installed.  Meanwhile, I can see if the problem still
occurs with his drive in my Linux machine.
