I'm leaning toward hal and "that damn thing in KDE". Have to read more
on hal to figure out what to do that might fix it. As for the "damned
KDE thing", I upgraded to KDE 3.5.1 which gives me the option of turning
it off in KDE services. In 3.4.3, I had to comment out stuff in
/etc/ivman/IvmConfigActions.xml. That solved the popping up of
konqueror every time I inserted a disc, but may also be the cause of the
problem. I think I'll try uncommenting the stuff and then disabling the
service in kcontrol.
